For a number of years some MU members kept in contact with a local prison. They offered support at visiting times and provided ‘Fresh Start’ bags for released prisoners who had no homes to go to. The bags contained essential new clothing and a message of hope. This initiative stopped during Covid.
Currently MU is providing some support through the ‘Oswin Project’.
The Oswin Project is linked with HMP Northumberland. Its founder and CEO is Fiona Sample OBE. The project connects prospective employers with prisons to enable training and work in prison and to grow connections, so prisoners have a job on release. The Oswin Project runs Café 16 in Newcastle Cathedral.
